Subject: Gus, SB and Windows
Hi, I have a Gus and a Soundblaster peacefully coexisting in my
computer, and under DOS everything works fine.
But I can't seem to get My GUS installed under Windows.
Windows gives me a conflict between my two cards
Does anyone know how to solve this ?
Thanx

It is included with the compressed samples. It is called testd_s.exe.
BTW the daughterboard will be able to do this in hardware, and Tom Klok has
modified the code to make it fast enough to do real time compression/
decompression.

[making a headphone/speaker control]
And for people who are scared of their soldering abilities, Radio Shack sells
a headphone volume control which will do the trick and cost less than 5$.

Probably all condenser mike without internal power, right? You need either a
dynamic microphone or a self powered condenser mike. For a circuit on how to
use condenser that are not self powered, check micro.arj on epas. It includes
a design for a Macintosh microphone, a Radio Shack electret (which needs -8v
but some require +8v so you have to reverse the battery on the circuit) and
both work great. I also use PZM mikes with this circuit instead of the poor
power circuit that come with the PZMs (and scrap the 10Kohm transfo which is
not needed).

Doesn't matter. By using a mono mic on the GUS you simply put to ground one
input which will not damage the GUS.

With or without it works perfectly.

Because it's a dynamic microphone. The pickups look like headphone speakers.

Not. I've sent you 2 messages already about that. It correctly reports stereo
recording capabilities at 8 bit. Works for 11025, 22050 and 44100 Hz.

All software that supports stereo recording in windows does work in stereo.
Not just Goldwave, but Wave, Cooled etc...

Well maybe you do not check your email? There is no such bug (unless you have
a very old version of the driver - what is the date of the grvsultr.386 and
ultrasnd.drv?)

It is probably a condenser microphone that needs power to work properly.

You can use a mono mic succesfully:
stereo mono
| | | |
---- ----
|| || <--- ground
-- ||
|| || <--- left input
-- --
\/ \/ <--- right input
With a mono microphone, the left input will be grounded (no problem) and the
right input will get the signal from the microphone. Since the right channel
is what is sampled when you select mono, it works great.
Note that this is ok because it is an input stage. For output stages (line or
amplified) never use a mono jack in a stereo output jack.
> # is there some specific type of mic that I should try? (dynamic etc)
> ==> I use a dynamic mic. They usually have flatter and better frequency
> response.
Depends. PZM have far better frequency response than any dynamic microphone
under 500$ and cost 50$. PZM are condenser mike that can accept up to -15volts
and can easily be modified for balanced XLR or jack use.
> # what impedence should I try to get?
> ==> This shouldn't matter much; most mic's o/p in the mV range, and are
> designed for mic-level input.
There are 2 ranges: 600 ohm and 10Kohm. 600 ohm is what you want on the GUS.
I have used succesfully all dynamic microphones that i had: Shure, Grundig,
Senheiser and even a cheapie radio shack and a cheapie lloyds. I also have
used with my circuit in micro.arj Macintosh microphones, PZM mikes (work
directly too without modification), electret capsules. I have also tried
a self powered condenser microphone. All worked, but the 10Kohm didn't give
a very strong signal, but still, worked.
Note to all: music questions (that includes modifying the GUS for XLR inputs,
how to get microphones working, speakers, composition software etc...) should
go to the gus-music list. I am still subscribed to this list, but in a very
short time i wont be anymore. Most other hardware hackers are only on the
music and sdk list so you wont get much technical answers anymore...
Ciao,

I used to think this...until I looked in the newest Tiger catalog.
Unless the new triple speed NEC CD-ROMS are also being remaindered (funny,
I didn't even know they existed till I looked at that catalog) it seems that
Tiger has moved from the DAK catalog arena to that of Micro Warehouse. I
also saw the PAS and Turtle Beach cards in there too, I think. Don't worry
about the GUS!

For the solder-uninclined (like myself), Radio Shack sells a nifty little
inline volume control for around $5US. I've been using mine for some
time now, with no problems.

I got Halloween Harry to work not bad using SBOS 1.43. It is
reasonably playable, with music a bit scratchy. SBOS 1.37 worked
OK but not quite as well. SBOS 3.60 worked but was extremely
fuzzy and jerky. I could not try it with 1.20, as I do not seem
to have it anymore. Could somebody upload it to epas?
It seems like a pretty good game. Might be worth registering
if it supported the GUS properly...

Where can I find one (or several) of these beasts, or how can I make my own?
I'm not an EE major, but I own a soldering iron.

I uploaded a demo of the Terminator Rampage game to epas called

I also uploaded a 3D sound demo from Europe called GUS3DEMO.ZIP.

Ok, I have tried almost every conceivable setup. I still get
random lockups. What setups have been successful for others?
By the way SBOS 3.60 definitely sounds the best for this game,
but it is not stable.

Hello!
What is the specification for the GUS ram? I know I need 80ns Drams,
but are they - 256X4, 256X1, or what?
Thanks!

Actually, while this was probably true a year ago, Tiger seems to have
shifted gears into carrying product lines now. There are several pages
for each of the following companies dedicated to brand new hardware/software:
NEC (the new 3x triple speed CD ROMS + entire line of computers),
IBM (hardware + OS/2, PC DOS 6.1), Sony (sampling of non-computer stuff),
Logitech (scanners, mice, soundcards), Lotus (software), and tons of
multimedia hardware/software/CDROMs. This is from the latest catalog,
Fall 1993. Check the prices -- it's definitely not closeouts anymore.
Can't wait until Gravis has their own page with the Max + daughter boards! :-)

Hello all!
Quick question:
After messing around with Ultramid with several games, I decided
to try it with UW2. The intro never sounded better!
So...with my new sound, I decided to actually start playing this
game with the intent to solve it. Unfortunately, I noticed that
although all of the sound works great, everytime a digitized sound
gets "sounded" my character turns a little to the left.
I messed around with the sounds and found that the music for the
game has no effects on it. When I turn the sound off and leave the
music going, things are fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks alot!

Happy Gus-ing!

Subject: Using to mono microphones
I have two mono mics which I would like to hook together for stereo
sampling. I've tried to do this and for some reason it does not work (I
tested the connections on my home brew adaptor and they were OK) - what
gives?. Also, what is the situation with MegaEM and Gravis, I don't want
to register if a gravis version is about to come out? Lastly, does
anyone know how to get the miles/dgipak drivers to work with Warlords II
- for some reason they wont work - could it be because their drivers are
labelled 1991,92?

Subject: volume in 2nd reality
i'm not sure that i made myself understood... the sound through an
amplifier connected to the line-out of the gus sounds quite good, but i
wanted to check if the 3d sound was different using headphones. I plugged
in some headphones which have a volume control built-in to the line, and
ran 2nd reality. The volume of the output from the amp-out line is quite
high and results in clipping of the sound. It does not matter where i put
the volume control of the headphones, the source of the clipping is coming
from the card's amp-out line, and not from the headphones
again, is there any way to turn down the volume of the amp-out line via
software?
and thanks for that last reply, it was interesting and should be quite
useful for anyone not having a volume control on their headphones, that's
one that should be incorporated into the FAQ
